Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Nematic liquid crystals that have high liquidity are widely used in optical devices such as liquid crystal displays because their molecular orientations can be controlled easily by electric field. In this report, we investigated a technique to control the molecular orientation of nematic liquid crystals using ultrasound and the application to the variable focus lens. The ultrasound optical lens consists of a liquid crystal layer with the thickness of 50 or 100 μm and a PZT ring transducer. The optical lens changed the focal length and acted as a convex lens under ultrasound excitation. The change of refractive index in the lens gives the variable-focus function. The lens with the LC layer of 100 μm enabled to expand the variable range of focusing.
