Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We evaluate mode conversion characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) waveguides. A two-dimensional (2D) IMI waveguide with an air gap is analyzed using the FDTD method. The IMI waveguide supports two propagating modes, i.e., a long-range (LR) surface plasmon mode and a short-range (SR) surface plasmon mode. It is shown that the air gap placed in the one side of the insulator acts as a phase shifter, leading to a mode conversion. A conversion efficiency of more than 90% is found to be achieved for the conversion from the LR to SR modes and vice versa. Next, we study a three-dimensional metal slab waveguide with an air gap. It is shown that a mode conversion efficiency of about 70% is obtained.
