A polarization splitter using a hybrid plasmonic waveguide operating in the terahertz region

Abstract(in English) We propose a polarization splitter consisting of a hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a dielectric waveguide (DW) in the terahertz region. Indium antimonide is used for the HPW. First, we carry out the eigenmode analysis of the HPW and DW using the beam-propagation method based on Yee's mesh and evaluate the effective refractive indices. For the TE mode, it is shown that there exist waveguide widths with the phase matching condition being satisfied between the two waveguides. Next, the HPW and DW are arranged in parallel to form a polarization splitter. The coupling length of the TE mode is calculated with respect to the waveguide width. When the core width of the HPW is 73 μm and that of the DW is 70 μm, it is indicated that the coupling length is relatively long (2682 μm). To shorten the coupling length, a dielectric material is embedded into the space between the two waveguides. It is shown that the coupling length is reduced to 1038 μm by embedding the dielectric material. Finally, the propagation analysis is performed using the finite-difference time-domain method.The extinction ratios of the TE and TM modes are evaluated, and the polarization splitting behavior is demonstrated.
