Abstract(in English) | We propose a TE-pass/TM-stop waveguide polarizer with a semiconductor layer in the terahertz region. First, we investigate a two-dimensional (2-D) polarizer. The eigenmode analysis is carried out for the polarizer section with InSb or InAs being adopted for the semiconductor layer. In this analysis, we calculate the overlap integral between the input eigenmode and the two TM modes of the polarizer section, and the propagation loss of the latter two modes. From these results, we estimate an appropriate buffer thickness. Next, we consider the polarizer using InSb as a semiconductor layer. We investigate the frequency characteristics with respect to temperature changes using the finite-difference time-domain method. It is shown that an extinction ratio of more than 40 dB can be obtained at a designed frequency. However, it is revealed that the peak frequency of an extinction ratio becomes higher as the temperature is increased. Consideration is next given to the polarizer using InAs as a semiconductor layer. The polarizer is found to offer an extinction ratio of more than 20 dB over a frequency range of 1.3 to 1.65 THz from 280 to 320 K. Finally, we investigate a three-dimensional (3-D) polarizer using InAs as a semiconductor layer. It is shown that the comparable performance to the 2-D polarizer can be obtained for the 3-D one. |
