Design of a spot-size converter using a rectangular core

Abstract(in English) This paper clarifies that a spot-size converter (SSC) using a rectangular Si-core improves the spot size conversion for both TE and TM modes, even for a horizontally tapered core. We first investigate a configuration with a square Si-core together with a linear taper in the horizontal direction. This, however, results in unbalanced conversion between the TE and TM modes. Special attention is paid to the guideline determined by equating the local taper length to the beat length between the guided and radiation modes. It is found that the power for the TM mode is improved by introducing a rectangular Si-core because the guidelines for the TE and TM modes become closer to each other. Finally, we consider an SSC when the core width is increased. The SSC using the rectangular core with a curvilinear taper achieves nearly the same characteristics as the structure with a narrow core width.
