Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | We are required to behave appropriately to suit the situations where we are in. One of the behavioral controls is a selection of linguistic register which suits the listener, and making a mistake to select a linguistic register sometimes could be interpreted as rudeness and offend the listener and result in a negative impact on the relationship with that individual. Previous studies showed that 5- to 6-year-olds almost understand the appropriate relationships between the listener and linguistic register. Moreover, 7-year-old children understand the appropriate register selection makes the addressees feel good. Although previous studies have examined the process of children’s register acquisition, the mechanism of register acquisition has not been paid attention. Thus, this study examined how children are able to understand register-listener relationships and the social meaning of register selection. 3- to 12-year-old children (n=56) participated in the studies. The results showed that children’s age affects the understanding of register-listener associations. We also found that the understanding of register-listener associations and emotion comprehension don’t affect understanding of the social meaning of register selection. |
