A Method of Glossiness Preserving Image Coding

Abstract(in English) Image coding plays an important role to reduce their cost for storage or transmission. Current image coding techniques usually use signal-to-noise ratio as an image quality metric and an image coding method based on perceptual quality metric has not been much studied. In this study, we focus on perceptual gloss that is one of the sense of qualities in “SHITSUKAN” and aim to construct an image coding method with preserving glossiness. Since JPEG has been widely used in the world, we provide an encoder equipped with the proposed method capable of decoding with current JPEG decoder. Specifically, the proposed method evaluates the glossiness for each block in the image and encode blocks with adaptively different quality according to the glossiness. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through subjective assessments.
