Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When we recognize a familiar person, exaggerating distinctive features of the face makes it easier to identify the person (Caricature effect). This effect is usable for the creation of more memorable facial stimuli. Indeed, familiarization with caricatured faces improves the recognition performance of the veridical faces (Reverse caricature effect; RCE). In this study, we investigated under what conditions the reverse caricature effect occurs through three experiments. Throughout the experiments, participants observed a set of veridical faces and 75% caricatured Japanese faces , and asked to perform a recognition test for the faces. The results revealed the robust RCE occurs even when memorizing the faces is not required (Experiment 1 and 2), and when the RCE persists for at least two days (Experiment 3).
