Development of A Location Estimation System for Implantable UWB Devices

Abstract(in English) A wireless capsule endoscope, which is one of implant medical devices enhanced by wireless communications, has so far attracted much attention. For efficient treatment based on wireless capsule endoscopy, it is important to estimate the location of the wireless capsule endoscope with high accuracy. The UWB (Ultra WideBand) low-band at 3.4-4.8 GHz has been considered to ensure reliable and high-speed implant communications, although 400 MHz MICS (Medical Implant Communication Service) band is mainly employed for commercially available capsule endoscopes. In addition, the UWB communication also enables us to realize accurate location estimation in the aid of its wideband characteristics. For this reason, in this paper, we developed an RSSI-based location estimation system with the UWB communication and quantitatively evaluated the estimation accuracy via human-equivalent liquid phantom experiments.
