Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of present study is to understand the underlying neuronal mechanism on view-invariant object recognition. Prior discrimination experience at a viewing angle causes response tolerance in a range of 30-60° around the angle for cells in the anterior part of inferotemporal cortex (TE area), the association area critical for object recognition and discrimination. Here, to reveal the dynamics during discrimination of objects across views, an object discrimination classifier was established and trained, by using the machine learning algorithm, with cell population response vectors to differentiate objects at the same viewing angle. The object discrimination performance of the classifier was tested by the responses to the object images at a viewing angle difference of 30°. It started to increase at about 100 ms after the stimulus onset, and kept higher than random discrimination level. The results demonstrate the dynamics of object discrimination processing, and feasibility of machine learning algorithm in extraction of the information from the neuronal responses of cell populations.
