Abstract(in English) | At secondary surveillance radar (SSR) undeployed airports, the ground staff for air traffic management relies on visual monitoring of the approaching aircraft. As the deployment and operation of SSR is costly, we focused on an alternative system named local area surveillance system (LASS), which includes some interrogators and passive secondary surveillance radars (PSSR). LASS is a compact system that specializes in aircraft surveillance at close range. LASS has certain features such as, 1) elliptic positioning method for calculating aircraft position, 2) using omni-directional antenna without moving the parts at transmitting and receiving stations, 3) the interrogator transmitting power is as small as 1/10 of SSR, 4) obtaining time synchronization from GPS, 5) being able to monitor aircraft that respond only to SSR mode A/C signals, and so on. Therefore, LASS has less construction cost, hence operation cost for aircraft monitoring will be also less. This study explains the principle and configuration of LASS and presents the results of aircraft detection and positioning with basic experiments using LASS. |
