A Facile Preparation of Sol-Gel-Based Initiator Layer for Surface-Initiated Polymerization

Abstract(in English) Surface modification by grafting polymer chains from substrate surfaces have attracted attention from both basic and industrial research fields. Although polymer brushes have a variety of unique surface property such as high durability, low-friction, and antifouling properties, preparation method needs precise control of reaction conditions and use of special reaction vessels. This makes it difficult to apply polymer brushes to real-life applications. Here, we report for the first time a facile and quick polymer brush formation process by using both sol-gel and surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization processes under ambient condition without any special reaction vessels.
