| Abstract(in English) | Strong discomfort is aroused when looking at the image of clusters of holes (trypophobia). We examined how trypophobia arousing from the images is affected by tactile sensation of convex and concave materials. In Experiments 1 and 2 we measured emotional valence of visual and tactile stimuli individually. In Experiment 3, participants evaluated emotional valence of the trypophobic and neutral images while touching the tactile stimuli. The results showed no significant effect of the tactile stimulation on the image evaluation. In Experiment 4, participants observed the images and then immediately touched the tactile stimulus for 2000 ms. After presentation of these visual and tactile stimuli, they evaluated emotional valence of the images. As a result, both types of the images were evaluated as more uncomfortable when touching the convex stimulus than when touching the concave or flat stimulus. Our findings suggest that integration of visuo-tactile information is involved with trypophobia. |
