Arc energy calculation in re-striking phenomena in break operations of AgSnO2 contacts in inductive DC load conditions up to 20V-17A

Abstract(in English) AgSnO2 contacts were operated to break an inductive DC load circuit of 14V-7A, 14V-12A, 20V-7A, or 20V-17A with an applied external magnetic field of about B=120mT at contact opening speeds in the range of 1mm/s to 200mm/s. During the break operations, re-striking phenomena were likely to be observed with larger load current levels and/or faster contact opening speed levels. The number of observed re-strike incidents was sometimes two or more. The calculation results of arc energy revealed that the total arc energy from the initial arc ignition to the final arc extinction reached almost the same level under the same operating condition, irrespective of re-striking incidents. Thus, occurrences of re-striking phenomena in break operations of inductive DC loads up to 20V-17A are influenced by the amount of energy that is supplied into and to be consumed at a contact gap. Even when arc is blown out of a contact gap due to an external magnetic field, re-striking may occur and repeat until the supplied energy is consumed.
