Abstract(in English) | Magnetic stimulation has widely attracted attention as a treatment for neurological diseases. In general, the size reduction of magnetic stimulation devices is desirable because the size is relatively large, compared with electrode stimulation devices. In transcranial magnetic stimulation, the exact brain regions and their triggering mechanisms of neural activity are largely unknown because of the large size of the devices. This study aims to develop a new implantable microcoil device, which stimulates the brain locally on the order of several tens of microscales, as well as clarifying the mechanisms of neural activity induction. First, to know the effects of the coil shape on the evoked neural responses, the induced electric field in semicircular coils with different diameters was numerically calculated using the finite element method. Next, from the obtained numerical results, we compared the spatial regions of the neural tissue above the minimum threshold that can induce neural activity in different coil shapes and examined the optimal coil shape for the effective stimulation to the neural tissue. Finally, we measured the brain areas where evoked responses through autofluorescent flavoprotein imaging and evaluated the validity. |
