| Abstract(in English) | We have been investigating a method to extract structural information of handwritten chinese characters, realizing how to recognize handwritten characters contained in images such as photographs. We already proposed the method using local features and an approximation of line segments, and verified that it is useful to recognize hiragana and chinese characters with few strokes. But it isn't achieved to obtain a sufficient recognition accuracy for chinese characters with a complicated structure, because it was difficult to extract the exact character structure. On the other hand, in topology, if there is a continuous mapping between two polyhedra, it is known that the simplicial approximation exists between their simplicial decompositions and that its existence guarantees these polyhedra are homeomorphic. In this research, regarding the character images as two-dimensional polyhedra, we try to extract structural information of characters by constructing simplicial approximation using feature points and their features obtained from scale space, and verify the proposed method by recognition experiments. |
