Abstract(in English) | With the proliferation of mobile devices, the amount of mobile traffic is significantly increasing. Advent of LTE and 5G has resolved the offloading issue. However, making use of WLAN resource should always be considered against spontaneous or unexpected traffic increase. To transfer offloaded traffic, mobile carriers are spreading wireless LAN AP around Japan. This attempt has been effective yet, but it may cause the waste of wireless resources in the future. Although each cellular carrier provides a wireless LAN access with own APs, the concentration of offloaded traffic causes significant congestion because there is no mechanism to coordinate resource usage between multiple APs. Regard this trend, we can expect that mobile carriers try to coordinate wireless resources based on some particular factors. In this study, we try to demonstrate that such coordination could be practically achieved with a traffic engineering approach. Specifically, since traffic consumes wireless resources only when it goes on a WLAN, we try to control the amount of transmitting traffic. To achieve this approach, we assume to use an SDN-enabled AP that accommodates multiple channels and multiple SSIDs. To provide multiple WLANs for multi-carrier environment, that AP actually provides multiple SSIDs on a same channel. By using this AP, we control the amount of transmitting traffic on each WLAN and thus coordinate the usage of wireless resources to maximize the efficiency of wireless resource utilization. In this context, this paper introduces a conceptual architecture to efficiently share wireless resources between multiple carriers. |
