Abstract(in English) The forthcoming deployment of mmWave-enabled 5G directional mobile networks will require beam finding algorithms that can adapt to changing channel conditions. We present IBM's Software Defined Phased Array Radio (SDPAR) as a platform for driving experimental research in channel modeling, beam optimization algorithms, and beam protocol development for these emerging mmWave 5G networks. The SDPAR operates at 28-GHz and has 64 dual polarized antennas and we present the software and hardware features that make the platform unique and well-suited for these applications. As an example, we also show experimental results for a beam-finding algorithm that successfully operates in the presence of interference.
