Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We humans are capable to process various sensory information flexibly and perform motor actions based on the information. In order to explore how we realize this sensory-motor integration, it is important to investigate the property of inaccuracy in human motor action, that is very different from machine processing. Many studies have investigated tapping bias in synchronizing tapping movement tasks with periodic sensory stimuli. In these studies, it has been reported that the tapping bias depends on the stimulus modality (visual or auditory) and the property of the stimulus. In recent years, it has been also reported that these tapping biases are reflected in event-related potentials (P200-N100 amplitude) and the authors proposed a hypothesis that tapping bias and brain activity are influenced by the difficulty of predicting the next stimulus timing. However, this previous study did not directly control “difficulty of prediction” because the stimuli were periodically presented. In this study, we directly control“difficulty of prediction” by changing a fluctuation width of inter-stimulus intervals. As a result, we found that fluctuation of inter-stimulus interval influences tapping bias and brain activity. This result indicates that tapping bias and brain activity are influenced by the "difficulty of predicting the next stimulus timing".
