Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, there has been a growing interest in non-invasive stimulation of the brain for medical treatment and diagnosis. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive scheme that induces an electric current below the stimulating coil, in which a pulse is injected through its windings. TMS has been used for brain mapping of language and motor function. However, there has been reported that discomfort/pain can be experienced in face or jaw muscles when stimulating speech-associated areas of the brain for TMS placed on the temporal region. The aim of this study is to investigate TMS-side- effects on nerve stimulation by implementing an electromagnetic computation of the TMS-induced electric fields using a detailed human head model, and its effect on nerve model activation. We compared measurements of the TMS intensity thresholds of pain perception with computed nerves response thresholds. Finally, we investigated whether the nerve of the skin or muscle is responding to the stimulation of the language area by TMS.
