Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) With a growing interest of project-based learning (PBL), and our institute has promoted, in the past decades, an original PBL-based educational program in order to develop students who independently think and act. Throughout the course of the PBL-based education program, the students will handle their familiar problems and tackle towards finding solutions by team activities and logical approaches, and the program is designed to enhance their self-directed and interactive in-depth learning. In addition, with the recent growing recognition of importance of English communication skills to adopt the global societies, we offer the PBL program in English language. However, English is not the first language for most of the students, and communication in English may be one of the biggest challenge despite the fact that communicating in a team is essential in the PBL activities. In this study, we introduced icebreaking activities to the PBL course which are designed to lower the barriers for students to communicate in English and then enhance motivation. Furthermore, we analyzed the effectiveness of the activities, which are discussed in this paper.
