Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Pedestrian crowds are a common sight in every city around the globe. In particular, transportation facilities, sport venues and shopping centers are increasingly overwhelmed with the task of managing large crowds of people. Some of the elements which make crowd management a difficult task are the complexity of pedestrian motion and the inefficient way in which information are delivered to pedestrians. On one side, the impossibility to measure "congestion" makes it difficult to evaluate crowd conditions. On the other side, the heterogeneity of pedestrian crowds and the limited compliance of people to indications given, limit the effectiveness of control solutions. In this research, both aspects are being addressed. A method is presented to quantify congestion in crowds and optimal information delivery strategies are investigated to improve the communication with different types of pedestrian users. Results of this study may help designing information systems for public spaces which are both efficient and warmly welcomed by its users.
