Development of Operator Support System for Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract(in English) In Japan, the number of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) has been increasing with the advancement of an aging society. TKA is an operation to cut the damaged surface of patient’s knee joint and implant an artificial knee joint. The implantation angle of the artificial knee joint is decided based on patient’s mechanical axis, and it’s difficult for doctors to accurately estimate patient’s mechanical axis in a clinical setting. In addition, there’re several challenges with existing systems estimating mechanical axis, and they haven’t been widely used. Therefore, in this research, in order to overcome these challenges and develop a system to estimate patient’s mechanical axis in a clinical setting, we have developed a calculation program and predetermined angle notification function using a three-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU).
