[Invited Talk] High Function Semiconductor Lasers for Next Generation Optical Communication Systems

Abstract(in English) Compact narrow linewidth semiconductor laser source is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing optical negative feedback technology to realize high function semiconductor lasers for next generation optical communication systems. The technology uses only a single mode semiconductor laser and an optical filter. From the numerical analysis, we confirm that the spectral linewidth of semiconductor laser can be reduced to less than 1/10,000. A proof-of-concept experiment shows that the spectral linewidth of free running laser (10 MHz) can be reduced to 3 kHz by utilizing the optical negative feedback technology. For the technology, realization of wide modulation bandwidth directly modulated semiconductor laser is required to enlarge a phase margin in optical negative feedback system. To realize ultra-high-speed lasers we propose and demonstrate a hybrid modulation laser. We also introduce the characteristics of the laser.
