Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of this study is to examine the cultural differences in emotional expression. We analyzed Eastern and Western speaker’s facial and vocal expressions recorded in a stimulus set (Tanaka et al., 2015). We compared the feature of facial movement and vocal sound between Japanese and Dutch speakers. The results showed that the standard deviation of fundamental frequency of vocal expression (i.e., pitch variation) was larger in Dutch speakers than in Japanese speakers. In addition, as for facial expressions, our results suggest that Dutch speakers express their emotions more clearly than Japanese speakers do.
