Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We present the results of three eye-tracking experiments: the first tested full NP vs. pronominal subject and object relative clauses; the second compared object relative clauses with an alternate baseline consisting of the same string of words in a sentential complement rather than an object relative clause; and the third compared relative clauses following animate nouns with relative clauses following inanimate nouns. The main finding was that like native speakers, L2 speakers of English had longer reading times for full NP object relative clauses. However, the difficulties were only reflected in late measures of eye movement, and not in measures of initial fixation, as is typically the case for native speakers.
