[Poster Presentation] Examination of stop consonants produced by Mandarin-Japanese-bilingual children and their monolingual parents

Abstract(in English) Parental speech input is an important factor in children’s language development. Nevertheless, the relation between bilingual children’s speech production and their speech input has little attention. This study investigated Mandarin-Japanese bilingual children’s phonetic features (VOT and f0) of Japanese and Mandarin stop production and these of the same sounds by their native Japanese and Mandarin speaking parents. The results revealed 1) the bilingual children showed the child specific process of language acquisition, 2) the bilingual children were competent with the stop consonants like those produced by their parents at the age of three, and 3) the bilingual children performed similarly to their parents in terms of f0 patterns. This study could provide a contribution to a better understanding of language acquisition in simultaneous bilinguals.
