Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study suggests that illusory licensing of wh-phrases in Japanese might be due to mis-revision of structural representations in reanalysis processes driven by a signal of sentence ungrammaticality. Wh-phrases in Japanese need to be licensed by a c-commanding licensor. Illusory licensing refers to a phenomenon whereby readers erroneously parse ungrammatical sentences as if they were grammatical because of a structurally irrelevant licensor. Previous works attributed this phenomenon to a cued-based memory misretrieval. In contrast, this study argues that illusory licensing of Japanese wh-phrases cannot be explained by erroneous memory processes, and instead suggests a possibility that error-driven misreanalysis of a sentence structure induces the illusions in Japanese wh-sentences.
