Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | In MPEG-DASH (MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), a standard for video playback, ABR(Adaptive Bit Rate)is utilized. A chunk of video data called segment is transmitted by TCP and its coding rate is selected by the ABR algorithm. There are many versions of TCP algorithms, and it is general that the installed TCP algorithm is different for the OS, e.g. Linux and Windows, of the end host. In this paper, we evaluate application-perceived fairness between two end hosts implementing the same ABR algorithm on two different TCP algorithms. Our evaluation results by computer simulation experiments show that congestion window has large amount of unused space at the beginning of each video segment. This is because many ACKs are received with no data transmission at the end of each video segments. As a result, we observe many packet losses because the video segment packets are transmitted in a bursty manner at the beginning of the next video segment. This burst loss occurs with high probability for the TCP algorithms which generally obtain high throughput. We confirm that this behavior slightly improves unfairness between two TCP algorithms. These results show that interaction between the application layer and the transport layer brings slight fairness improvement when compared to the situation that TCP with greedy source model, i.e. application layer has no regulation of data transmission rate. |
