Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have originally developed the FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) Doppler radar named FALCON-I in W-band 95 GHz at Chiba university and use it for cloud observations. FALCON-I consists of two 1m-diameter antennas and has high spatial resolution of 0.18 degree FWHM, which corresponds to 15m FWHM at the height of 5 km. A high range resolution of 48m is realized with the FMCW type radar, which is about several times higher than that of normal pulse type radar. Output power of FALCON-I is as small as 0.5W, which is much smaller than usual pulse type radars. Although its small output power, FALCON-I has enough sensitivities to observe thin clouds at high altitude up to 15 km and has high resolution in Doppler measurements. Using FALCON-I, we have observed melting layer at the cloud bottom, in which ice particles of cloud are melting to water particles and generate raindrops. We observe these raindrops are gathered up to the sizes of 2mm in diameters and accelerated downward. These results show that observations with FALCON-I are useful to investigate mechanism of generation of raindrops in clouds.
