A study on topology optimization of optical device by function expansion method without gray area

Abstract(in English) In order to develop high performance optical devices for realizing high speed and large capacity photonic network, studies on topology optimization of optical devices have been intensively conducted. In the topology optimization, it is necessary to be able to efficiently analyze device characteristics with high accuracy even for devices with high refractive index difference and complicated device geometry generated in the optimization iteration. In this research, we study on the topology optimization method in which finite element method (FEM) for wave propagation analysis and adjoint variable method (AVM) for sensitivity analysis are utilized. In this study, the function expansion method is employed to express device geometry, and in order to treat material boundary more accurately, we also studied about automatic finite element mesh generation, and sensitivity analysis without gray area.
