Widening the polarization conversion properties of an L-figured Si-wire waveguide

Abstract(in English) We present the design guideline of a polarization converter consisting of an L-figured Si-wire waveguide that operates over a wide bandwidth with low insertion loss. The use of the normalized frequency allows us to select a range of the core width. The normalized effective index difference between the first and second modes is evaluated by the eigenmode analysis. Finally, we evaluate the conversion length and the insertion loss as a function of the defect amount of the core. As a result, an extinction ratio of more than 20 dB is achieved with an insertion loss of less than 1 dB over a wavelength range of 1.3 μm to 1.6 μm with a range of the core width from 0.3 μm to 0.32 μm.
