Simultaneous Heartbeat and Blink Detection Using Doppler Sensor

Abstract(in English) Heartbeats and blinks are vital signs that reflect our stress and fatigue, and thus the simultaneous heart- beat and blink detection is demanded for the accurate stress and fatigue estimation. A Doppler sensor could be a key device that facilitates the non-contact heartbeat and blink detection. Although the conventional methods can accurately detect heartbeats and blinks by transmitting microwaves toward a subject’s chest and a face, respectively, none of researches has realized the simultaneous heartbeat and blink detection with one Doppler sensor. To detect heartbeats and blinks with one Doppler sensor, it is necessary to transmit microwaves toward a body including not only a chest but also a face, which brings the degradation of the heartbeat and blink detection accuracy due to at least two issues: (i) the low SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of heartbeat and blink components over a received signal of a Doppler sensor, and (ii) the similarity of the spectrum distribution of heartbeats and a blink. In this report, we propose a spectrogram-based simultaneous heartbeat and blink detection using one Doppler sensor. In the proposed method, based on a supervised machine learning classifier, the spectrum due to a blink on a spectrogram is detected over the one that might be due to heartbeats and blinks. The spectrum due to heartbeats are then detected based on the spectrum that is not due to a blink. Through the experiments to observe heartbeats and blinks with one Doppler sensor, we confirmed that our proposal simultaneously detected heartbeats and blinks with high accuracy, compared with the other existing methods that independently detect heartbeats and blinks.
