Proposal of Spam Filter by Applying Neural Network for Mitigating Catastrophic Forgetting

Abstract(in English) The trend of spam mails is changing. Since, in recent years, spam mails sent from overseas mail serversare increasing, spam mails are written not only in Japanese but also in foreign languages. Conventionally, Bayesianfilter have been widely used for filtering spam mails. However, a large amount of computer resources is requiredto store previously acquired emails for detecting spam mails changing year by year. Recently, text classificationusing neural network is widely explored. Because of its goodness in the big data processing, it is expected to beapplied to spam filtering. Since the conventional existing neural network is known in its problem called catastrophicforgetting, which is learning a new skill by losing previously acquired skills, a new neural network algorithm calledElastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) is proposed. In EWC, instead of retaining past data, it only needs to retainthe weights and biases of the learned neural network. That is, by using EWC, we can expect the knowledge learnedin the past can be retained without keeping all the data in the past. Therefore, in this report, we propose a spamfilter for identifying spam mails in multiple languages using EWC.
