Magnetic pulse welding method commutating discharge current to collision part of Al/Cu sheets

Abstract(in English) In this report, magnetic pulse welding is performed by rapidly flowing a discharge current from a capacitor bank to an insulated 5-turn flat coil. Two sets of overlapped Al/Cu sheets with a gap are fixed on the coil, and high density magnetic flux is applied to them. The flux intersects the Al sheets near the coil. The resulting eddy currents are induced in the sheets, applying electromagnetic forces to them. The Al sheets collide to the Cu sheets at high speed and these are welded. The current is set to be nearly peak when the sheets collide. One set is fixed as usual and the other set is fixed as mechanical switch contacts. The contacts (Al/Cu sheets) connected to both ends of the coil. When the discharge current reaches nearly the peak, the contacts collide and so the current flowing through the coil commutates to the short-circuit including the contacts. Depending on the circuit conditions after the commutation, the coil current does not oscillate but gradually damps. The results of two sets of Al/Cu sheets welded in this way are reported.
