Abstract(in English) | The urbanization phenomenon has led to an increase of congestion in cities. Also considering the increase of elderly population, the heterogeneity of human crowds has become a relevant characteristic. This heterogeneity is expressed in a difference in walking speed which is a cause of congestion. Using conventional measures, quantifying the congestion caused by this phenomenon was not possible. In this research we present a novel definition for congestion in pedestrian crowds and use it to analyze an experiment involving a heterogeneous crowd composition. As a result, we found that a difference in walking speed indeed contributes to an increase in congestion. |
