Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A new private Long Term Evolution (LTE) specification called sXGP (shared eXtended Global Platform) has been defined and made available since 2018. sXGP can be used in unlicensed LTE bands but with the same security and reliability features as production LTE networks. sXGP attracts much attention, filling the gap between public LTE, highly secure and reliable but costly solution and wireless LAN (WiFi), less secure and reliable one. More and more enterprises, local governments and industries are deploying their own private LTE networks to keep their data securely and locally and selectively delivered to the Internet. In this paper, we introduce our prototype system of software-defined eNodeB (eNB) and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) components. Utilizing the flexibility of softwarization, we demonstrate the extensions to sXGP's capabilities in two ways. First, we introduce application specific network slicing, isolating multiple application traffic in different private LTE network instances on the same infrastructure, enabling advanced traffic optimization and per-application edge computing. Second, to alleviate the inherent coverage problem of private LTE, we integrate our private LTE network with a public one by sharing Home Subscriber Server (HSS) database so that a UE may migrate between two networks seamlessly with only one SIM. These experimental studies show that softwarization may quickly and flexibly enhance the benefits of private LTE networks, which may also be applied to 5G and Local 5G. Especially, we believe that the second extension of alleviating coverage issue can not only help local governments and enterprises promote the deployment of their private LTE networks but also benefit the 5G/Local 5G deployment.
