Abstract(in English) | Polarization-modulated signals can be demodulated via direct detection of Stokes vectors. In this study, we develop a quantum theory of noise in the Stokes vector receiver and derive conditions for enabling simultaneous measurements of all three Stokes parameters with the minimum power penalty. Thereafter, the Gaussian noise model for the shot noise and optical pre-amplifier noise is discussed in detail. The bit error rate characteristics for the cubic polarization modulation format are calculated based on the Gaussian noise model. We examine how the branching loss inherent in the Stokes vector receiver degrades the receiver sensitivity and how the optical pre-amplification can compensate for such degradation. |
