Data Compression System of Storage Compatible with High Performance and High Compression Rate

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the amount of data handled by information systems is increasing explosively. In order to store huge amount of data, required cost for the storage system is also increasing. Data compression function on storage system is effective to reduce the cost of the storage system. However, throughput and response performance are degraded by increasing compression/decompression processing time. Therefore, in many cases, the storage system adopts an algorithm which has low processing load but low compression rate for the compression function. In this paper, we propose “Smart compression technology” which realizes high performance and high compression rate by recompressing majority and infrequently accessed data with high compression rate algorithm. Smart compression technology predicts the performance impact of adopting the high compression rate algorithm based on the observed access frequency information. As a result of evaluation and simulation, by adopting Zstandard as the high compression rate algorithm, the throughput and response performance is only degraded by 5% and the compression rate is improved by 21%.
