Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Cultural psychological researches indicates that East Asians tend to pay attention to contextual information in art than Westerners. The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology for comparing Japanese and American styles in movie posters. The analysis targets were the American version and the Japanese version posters of 36 of Academy Award winning works from 1984 to 2016. This study counted the number of characters who were the main characters in the movie (the central character), and those who were not a central character (the supporting role). In addition, this study calculated the ratio of the area of the face of the central character to the total area of the posters. The results indicated that the number of supporting roles were significantly more in the Japanese version than in American version, and the main character's face was larger in the American version than in the Japanese version. The cultural differences of attention to contextual information and the poster design were discussed. |
