Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | In this study, we developed a virtual English learning environment for elementary school students. The learning environment allows users to experience simulated American life, to learn differences between American and Japanese culture, and American verbal and non-verbal behaviors via avatars. Taking the old Japanese tale “Kaguya-hime” as the theme, the user, who acts as a price, can learn English and experience American culture while searching for the treasures that are requested by the Kaguya Princess. In order to make the learning environment suitable for elementary school students, we set two design policies. The first policy is to make the environment have many abundant cultural experiences that can be repeatedly learned. The second policy is to make the environment have full of items to be explored so that the users are not bored. The result of the initial evaluation indicates that the proposed learning environment can evoke the interest of culture experience elements and the intention to continuous usage. However, there is room for improvement in its operability and user interface. |
