[Technology Exhibit] Experimental Evaluation on Multi-Hop Route Construction in Wi-SUN FAN Systems

Abstract(in English) In recent years, one of the wireless multi-hop communication standards, Wireless Smart Utility Network Field Area Network (Wi-SUN FAN) is attracting attention for advanced smart city infrastructure. Wi-SUN FAN adopts IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy Networks (RPL) as routing protocol and uses Expected Transmission Count (ETX) as routing metric. However, using ETX in RPL causes a node to change its parent frequently because of fluctuation in link quality estimation. Moreover, frequent parent selection may make a node to choose parent with lower link quality and communication reliability becomes lower. In the real environment, such problems show very complicated behavior and it is essential to analyze behavior of network configuration in a real environment. However, there is no experimental analysis on route construction of Wi-SUN FAN. In this report, we construct a network in the real environment using Internet of Things Gateway (IoT-GW) with Wi-SUN FAN module, analyze the influences of route construction parameters, propose and evaluate two methods to realize the network stabilization, and demonstrate its effectiveness.
