Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Cheaters in an economic game tend to show the left side of the face to increase their facial trustworthiness. The present study used the photographs of cheaters and cooperators, who were asked to pose as much trustworthy as possible and examined the role of cooperativeness status (cheaters and cooperators) and pose orientation (left versus right) on their emotional valence and arousal. Thirty-two participants rated the emotional valence and arousal of the photographs on a 9-point scale. Overall, the emotional valence was positive across the conditions. More importantly, cheaters showing their left cheek were rated as more emotionally positive than cheaters showing their right cheek. Cooperators did not show such a lateral difference. On the other hand, there was a left cheek advantage in emotional arousal irrespective of cooperativeness status (i.e., cheaters and cooperators). These results suggest that cheaters use a smile on the emotional side of their face (i.e., the left) to increase their facial trustworthiness. |
