Construction of a high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic power generation system using a highly selective silicon rod type thermal emitter

Abstract(in English) We designed a thermophotovoltaic system that combines a Si rod-type thermal emitter with a high wavelength selectivity and a photovoltaic cell with a band-gap wavelength of 1.76 um, and tested its power generation. We built a system that can accurately measure the input thermal energy for the emitter, the temperature, and the electrical output power. The experimentally determined system efficiency, which is the ratio of ingoing thermal energy to output power of the photovoltaic cell, is above 10% at an emitter temperature of 1338 K. This is a high efficiency, i.e., larger than the highest value that has been previously reported, 6.8%. The present result can be considered as the present world record for the efficiency of a thermophotovoltaic system. We expect that by further efficiency improvements in the future, the heat that has so far been considered as wasted can be effectively utilized, and that these improvements lead to the development of the field of distributed energy supplies using combustion heat.
