Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Facial dominance plays a pivotal role in social cognition and has considerable impacts on interpersonal interactions. This study aimed to build a mathematical model determining the perceived dominance of East-Asian faces using a data-driven method. We first sampled 400 computer-generated faces and collected ratings on their facial dominance, and then identified quantitative links between dominance and facial shape and surface properties. As a result, our data-driven mathematical model allows for the quantitative manipulation of the facial dominance of any arbitrary East-Asian faces by transforming facial shape and surface characteristics. Our model provides a tool to effectively produce East-Asian face stimuli that quantitatively vary on dominance and can be used to elucidate visual processes underlying social cognition.
