Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study aims at investigating the different effects of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram usage on users’ loneliness and well-being, considering their personality traits such as self-esteem and shyness. We conducted a self-reported questionnaire targeting undergraduate and graduate students in Japan. We received 189 responses, among which 177 responses were analyzed since the remaining responses were incomplete. The results showed that only the frequency of making posts on Twitter had significant effects on increasing users’ loneliness, but their accessing time of Twitter through mobile devices had significant effects on decreasing loneliness and improving their level of well-being. However, no similar effects were found for Instagram and Facebook usage.
