Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Motor imagery is a mental process that simulates actions without actual motor execution. The present study investigated how difficulties in gait action affected motor imagery and activities of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in young adults. Participants performed imagined and actual walking along a 5-m walkway with three different widths (15 cm, 25 cm, and 50 cm). Brain activity during imagined walking was measured using a multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that participants underestimated their own actual execution in the most difficult, 15-cm condition. In addition, participants with more underestimation in the 15-cm condition showed more activity in the right PFC. These results suggest that the motor imagery (and prediction of actual execution) can be changed depending on the degree of difficulty of a given action, and that it is associated with the right PFC activity.
