Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This work of research aims to examine whether in-house events held by employers for the purpose of promoting walking can actually encourage the participants to walk more. Smartphones were used to measure the number of steps taken by participants and to send “push” notifications encouraging them to walk. Other types of information were also collected from these participants, such as their attitude toward their workplace and their motivations for participating. The analysis of the collected data found that the participants walked significantly more steps during the events than they did previously, indicating that the events were indeed effective. Effects varied depending on participants’ sense of belonging at their workplace and their motivations. However, the “push” notifications sent to the participants to promote walking were not proven to be effective and may even have had a negative impact.
