A Study of Low-Energy Video Encoding Method for Raspberry Pi

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we consider energy-efficient video encoding methods which are appropriate for performance-, power- and energy-limited devices such as Raspberry Pi. We compare high-performance video encoding methods such as H.264 which are based on inter- and intra-frame prediction and frame-by-frame encoding methods such as Motion JPEG which are applications of image encoding. We analyze the data compression rate and energy consumption of these video encoding methods. The results show that the energy efficiency of frame-by-frame encoding methods is better than that of high-performance methods which require inter-frame prediction. The encoded data size and energy consumption of H.264 become x1.65 smaller and x15.45 larger than that of Motion JPEG, respectively, when the motion compensation to the input video is complex. Therefore, Motion JPEG is the appropriate encoding method for our target power- and energy-limited system.
