Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An octopus has eight flexible long arms and each arm has an elaborate peripheral nervous system. In order to understand the information processing mechanism by such a decentralized system of octopuses, we conducted motion analyses of crawling movements of eight octopuses ({it{Octopus sinensis}}). The results showed that a bend was formed in some arms during crawling movements, and the propulsive force seems to be generated by propagating the bend to the distal. Contralateral arms are often used to produce propulsive forces simultaneously and the arm movement tended to propagate from posterior to anterior with respect to the direction of the movement. The results have also suggested that octopuses can move in various directions relative to the orientation of the body and interarm coordination changes according to the moving direction.
